Verified Attention, Programmatic Reach: DOOH's Push Beyond Impressions
Digital out of home advertising is moving beyond simple impression counts, and two recent industry moves highlight how the sector is proving engagement while expanding programmatic reach.
At the Governors Ball Music Festival in Flushing Meadows Corona Park, Queens, Samsung Electronics America showcased its latest display technologies in early June. The deployment underscored how major brands are using live-event environments to demonstrate display capabilities at scale.
In a separate activation, The Backpackster, a human-powered, measurable media network, released results from a World Cup campaign in Inglewood, California, surrounding SoFi Stadium. Units placed at primary pedestrian entry and exit points carried multiple brand campaigns through one of live events' most demanding settings. The activation generated 17,111 impressions, with Quividi's audience analytics logging 2,540 verified viewers and 1,148 engaged viewers who watched content for more than two seconds. Average attention time reached 2.95 seconds and average dwell time 7.5 seconds, with data showing which creative held viewers longest. Quividi's privacy-by-design approach processes camera data locally, generating anonymous insights such as gender and age without storing images or personally identifiable information.
"A World Cup crowd is about as hard a test as wearable digital media gets," said Mitch Wade, Chief Revenue Officer at Quividi, noting that qualifying every impression is what makes a moving screen accountable. The Backpackster's Founder and CEO Gaston Corbala said the goal was to demonstrate that real-world media can verify attention, not just generate impressions. Chris Damvakaris, CRO and Co-Founder of The Backpackster, added that brands need measurable engagement, efficient CPM performance, and clear revenue impact.
Meanwhile, in the programmatic space, VIOOH announced a strategic partnership with b.drops, Brazil's largest DOOH channel focused on self-care and wellness environments. The deal grants programmatic access to more than 165 million monthly impressions across 7,680 digital screens nationwide, representing 5% of Brazil's DOOH market. The network includes 6,241 screens in gyms such as Smart Fit, 1,180 in beauty salons like Jacques Janine, and 259 in barbershops, covering cities from São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro to Brasília, Curitiba, and Belo Horizonte. Gavin Wilson, VIOOH's Global Chief Commercial Officer, called Brazil one of the fastest-growing DOOH markets globally, while b.drops Co-Founder and Executive Director Felipe Viante emphasized the flexibility and geolocation benefits for international buyers.
Together, the developments reflect an industry-wide shift: impressions remain foundational, but verified attention, privacy-safe analytics, and programmatic access are adding accountability and targeting precision, giving advertisers a fuller picture of campaign performance and return on ad spend.
