Confirmed OOH impressions and what makes a single view real

Confirming a playback event across thousands of independent devices requires joint IAB standards and roughly forty simultaneous conditions for a single real impression.
standing in front of a screen confirms a playback event across potentially thousands of devices, each with independent hardware, connection and environmental conditions. IAB and IAB Europe published joint In-Store Retail Media Definitions and Measurement Standards in December 2024, and established a four-step view ladder — Ad Play, Gross Impression, Opportunity To See and Likelihood-To-See — to formalize what different levels of confirmed delivery actually mean.
What must apply for a single OOH impression to be real?
For a confirmed impression, roughly forty independent conditions must apply simultaneously. The power must reach the panel without tripping a fuse; the display must be turned on, not in sleep mode, with correct input selected and brightness calibrated to ambient light. The player must be running and reachable; the cables must be plugged in and undamaged; the handshake between player and display must hold. The content must be downloaded before the scheduled slot; the right creative must play for the right duration with audio in the intended state. And the screen must remain physically unobstructed — no seasonal decoration, pallet or barrier blocking the sightlines. These faults occur silently across aisles, driveways, transit galleries and parking facilities that barely share any operating conditions. No Fluff Advisory's review of IAB-
