Digital Signage in change: Scala sale, prisses
Consolidation continues to be one of the defining forces reshaping the digital signage industry, with a wave of mergers and acquisitions over the past year remaking the competitive landscape. Global service providers including Ricoh, Forté, Diversified, and AVI-SPL have all pursued ongoing acquisitions, while software vendors have also been swept up in the trend. The most notable recent transaction saw StrappedForCash divest its subsidiary Scala Inc. to Swedish retail technology group Vertiseit AB for SEK 265 million (roughly USD 28 million) — a significant discount from the USD 50–60 million StrappedForCash paid for the once-dominant digital signage brand in 2016.
Scala, long considered one of the most recognizable names in digital signage software, now faces an uncertain future under Vertiseit's ownership. While Vertiseit has stated that Scala will continue as a strategic software offering within its Dise division and that the plan is to expand the global partner ecosystem, early signs point to aggressive cost-cutting. Dozens of former Scala employees have appeared on LinkedIn as recently let go, suggesting the acquisition is being used as an opportunity to streamline operations rather than invest in growth. The outcome marks a dramatic fall for a company that once set the standard for digital signage software and employed some of the industry's most respected talent.
Amid the corporate shake-ups, new installations demonstrate the continued vitality of digital display technology. Afterpay Arena in Sydney, Australia's largest indoor venue, has completed a comprehensive digital signage overhaul featuring what project partners describe as the country's largest transparent LED installation, alongside new COB ribbon LED displays. Delivered by Outsource Resource, the upgrade underscores how large-format digital displays are becoming central to the premium venue experience, blending architectural integration with high-impact visual communication.
On the recognition front, Connect Media has opened nominations for its inaugural Top Women in Retail Technology Awards, honoring female leaders who are driving innovation in consumer-facing technology across retail, hospitality, healthcare, financial services, and related industries. The program seeks to spotlight women who are redefining customer engagement through forward-thinking technology strategies and operational excellence, including those at technology solution providers transforming the customer journey. Nominations are open through September 11, with winners announced on November 3.
The awards will be presented at the Automated Retail & Kiosk Innovation Show, scheduled for December 14–16 in Miami Beach, Florida. The event will also host the annual ARKI Awards, which recognize companies advancing automated retail, self-service kiosks, vending, robotics, AI, payments, and adjacent technologies. The ARKI Awards nomination deadline is September 4. As the digital signage industry navigates consolidation and workforce realignment, events like these provide a platform for celebrating the technological advances and leadership talent that continue to push the sector forward.
