Talon Acquires PJX Media as OOH Industry Ramps Up Summer 2026 With Safety PSAs and Awards Evolution

Independent out-of-home agency Talon has acquired US-based OOH specialist PJX Media, a move the companies say establishes the largest independent out-of-home advertising firm in the United States. Financial terms were not disclosed, but the deal represents a significant step in Talon's continued investment in the North American market and signals growing consolidation among independent players in the rapidly evolving OOH landscape.

The acquisition arrives during a busy summer for the out-of-home advertising sector. The Out of Home Advertising Association of America (OAAA) has renewed its partnership with the Ad Council and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for the Stop. Look. Lock. campaign, a public service initiative aimed at preventing pediatric vehicular heatstroke. As of July 10, 2026, 12 children have already died in hot cars nationwide this year, and vehicular heatstroke remains the leading cause of non-crash, vehicle-related fatalities for children 14 and under. The OAAA is calling on media owners to donate digital and static inventory to display the campaign's life-saving reminders throughout the summer.

On the creative front, the industry is gearing up for a revamped OBIE Awards, which for 84 years have celebrated the most daring work in out-of-home advertising. This year marks a major evolution: the awards will become a standalone event held during Out of Home New York Week, with the ceremony taking place at The Museum of Modern Art on October 15, 2026. OAAA President and CEO Anna Bager described the OBIEs as a celebration of ideas that make OOH a uniquely powerful creative medium, noting that the format's ability to turn public space into cultural canvas is more relevant than ever in a fragmented media environment.

The 2026 OBIEs introduce updated categories and judging criteria that prioritize creative ideas over format, reflecting how the industry's most impactful campaigns now transcend traditional boundaries to create cultural resonance. Last year's top honor went to The Coca-Cola Company for a campaign that demonstrated how iconic creative can be amplified at scale through out-of-home. Submissions close July 17, 2026, with entries open to agencies, brands, media owners, and production partners.

Together, Talon's strategic expansion, the industry-wide push behind Stop. Look. Lock., and the creative renaissance signaled by the OBIE Awards illustrate a sector that is consolidating commercially while broadening its societal and creative ambitions. As brands increasingly seek work that earns attention rather than interrupts it, OOH continues to position itself as the last true mass medium — one that is visible, shareable, and deeply woven into the fabric of public life.
